Session 8

Wednesday, October 23rd, 1935

FAST SUMMARY: The party finishes their fight with the evil mimes. The next morning they go to pick up the mambo who is helping them at a convenience store. A drive-by is performed on the store, but Jake shoots the offending car, causing it to collide with his. A fight ensues. The shooters turn out to be Black Hand (two of them brothers Jake had previously upset in a card game).

Session 7

Tuesday, October 22nd, 1935

FAST SUMMARY: The party is given a list of names. They go to a bar in the Irish Channel to track down the first one. They find his body strung up from a lamp post behind the bar with a purple rose attached. Jake starts a bar fight. The party goes a bit down the street and fights monstrous mimes.

(I’m starting to enter these quick summaries as placeholders for when one day there may be more time to fill in the details. Also hopefully this will keep us from forgetting everything.)

Session 6

PCs: Jake DeLaure, John Dresden, Anton/Mortes, Francois Gabon

- On Monday, Anton and Dresden attend a lunch with Damian Byrne. Byrne offers to introduce Anton to Helen Pyre, head of the Pyre Talent Agency. He gives Anton an application to look over and advises him that he will arrange for Helen to be in the audience at the Old Absinthe House when Mortes sings on the Day of the Dead celebration. Byrne commiserates briefly with Dresden’s job situation and gives him his card. Byrne also suggests that he may have access to resources that could be a big help in their investigations, but tells them that they’ll need to be absolutely certain they’re in dire need before using those resources.
- The group meets up that evening and exchanges the information they’ve learned thus far. Dresden agrees to assist the group in their investigation of Gretz if they will help him look into his story on Violet de Valois’ murder.
- On Monday night, Anton meets a couple more ghosts of recently deceased entertainers. None of them are familiar with Pyre Talent or Damian Byrne, but they say that they can have someone over the following night who’ll be more likely to have knowledge of them.
- On Tuesday, the investigators go to meet Emma Ross at City Hall. Emma tells them that Gretz was there earlier in the day and was behaving strangely. She tells the group she will inform them as soon as he returns, which he’s likely to do in a couple of days.
- In researching Gretz’ record requests, the group discovers that all of the deeds Gretz reviewed were for properties acquired by Hellstromme Industries.
- That afternoon, Dresden visits the Yellow Sign bookstore and negotiates part time work with its owner, Matthew Sanderson.
- On Tuesday night, Jake receives a message from Lou Thomas, the owner of a small charter fishing business who used to work with Jake’s father and uncle from time to time. Thomas asks to meet with Jake as soon as possible.
- Jake and the rest of the group go to Thomas’ office and meet him there. Thomas tells them that someone got into his office (with no signs of forced entry) and left two items. The first item is a note that says, “The Night Court is coming for you. You have three days to repent.” The second item is a shriveled purple rose very much like the poisoned roses from Violet de Valois’ funeral.

Session 5

PCs: Jake DeLaure, John Dresden, Anton/Mortes, Francois Gabon

- Jake and Lombardi play poker for the fate of Emma Ross. Jake wins. Lombardi releases Emma under the condition that the investigators will find Gretz. On the way to Anton’s house, Francois shows Emma the notebook from Gretz’ apartment, and she recognizes the series of numbers as index numbers for the city’s deed records.
- Dresden goes to the Yellow Sign Bookstore and does research until nightfall, attempting to discover what kinds of creatures would be able to pull off the murder of Violet de Valois. After finding a tome penned by members of an old gentleman’s club called The Explorer’s Society, he discovers that such a feat could perhaps have been accomplished by a ghost, a Harrowed, a Shadow creature or a Swarm Man.
- Jake, Anton and Francois return to Anton’s house, where Emma and Grant are reunited. Emma reveals that Gretz had been a bit distant with her lately, but that she does not know his whereabouts. After everyone else leaves, Lilly introduces Mortes to two of her deceased friends: Oscar Wilde and Scott Joplin, both of whom counsel him on the entertainment business before returning to their own amusements.
- At around midnight, Dresden goes to the shop of Madame Celine Pichette, a well-respected Mambo in the community and talks to her about de Valois’ murder. Madame Celine tells him that the murderer was probably either a Shadowfolk (a deceased individual who has become a type of Shadow creature) or a Revenant (a type of Harrowed that can be summoned and controlled to an extent). She also mentions that not long before her murder, de Valois was discovered to be the lost heir of Baron Simone LaCroix.
- The next day, Jake stops by Grant and Emma’s place asking for more information about Gretz. Emma says that when she returns to work tomorrow she can look up Gretz’ research requests and give them to Jake.
- Dresden checks public records and finds that Violet de Valois is descended from Gabriele de Valois, and that a recent amendment to the records shows that according to a church bible in the town of Manchac, Gabriele did have a son by Baron LaCroix whose name matches that of Violet’s father.

Session 4

PCs: Jake DeLaure, Anton/Mortes, Francois Gabon

- After leaving Sanzone’s, Dresden has gone off to do research, Jake goes on a buying spree and Mortes goes back to the Old Absinthe House to sing that evening.
- After a good performance, Mortes is greeted by Damian Byrne, who was in the audience. They set an appointment to have lunch the following Monday afternoon. Upon Mortes’ arrival at home, Lilly asks if she can come into the house to talk. She lets him know she has some deceased friends who might be interested in meeting Mortes and giving him advice and asks if she can have them over. Mortes agrees.
- The next morning, Jake finishes his buying spree by purchasing a used car. When he, Mortes and Francois meet up, they head over to Gretz’s apartment. The door opens to their knock. They enter and find the place in shambles – everything has been turned over, as though someone has searched the place and put nothing back. Looking around, they find an apron with the words “Blessed Rest Retirement Home” embroidered on it. They also find a notepad open to a page with multiple-digit numbers on it.
- As they are searching, two Black Hand thugs arrive at the apartment asking for Gretz. Upon being informed that Gretz isn’t in, they hand the investigators a note to give to Gretz and leave. The note reads, "You come to 413 Mandeville Street by 9 p.m. tomorrow night if you want to see the blond dame again. Bring the dough. If you snitch to the cops, we’ll know, so don’t get smart.”
- Jake, and then Mortes, call up the Blessed Rest Retirement Home from a pay phone and after annoying the nurse at the front desk, find that Gretz used to work there as an orderly, but was dismissed a few weeks ago. The nurse refuses to discuss any further details.
- The investigators spot a man in a cowboy hat sitting in a parked car nearby watching them. When they start to approach, he peels off into traffic. They attempt to pursue but lose him.
- Francois asks around the Marigny-Bywater area and finds the abandoned office building that matches the address on the note. A street urchin informs Francois that a few days ago he saw some men lead a young lady into the building against her will. Francois also notes that there is one light on in the building at a corner office and that there are a couple of cars parked in a nearby alleyway.
- Mortes calls Carmine Genna and after discussing what they’ve been working on, Carmine advises him that it turns out Angel Lombardi has been the one holding Emma Ross.
- The investigators go to the office building. Their knock is greeted by a couple of thugs. They ask to see Angel Lombardi, and are escorted into the corner office. There, they are greeted by the sight of Lombardi, several thugs (including Bruno Costa) and Emma, tied to a chair. Mortes attempts to negotiate Emma’s release, offering to find Gretz for them if they release Emma. Lombardi advises him that this is just business and that they can’t let Emma go until they get at least $2000 from Gretz.
- Jake tells Lombardi that Gretz isn’t going to pay his debt because he won’t really care what happens to Emma. Lombardi thinks on this and has to agree. He offers Jake a deal: if Jake can beat him in a poker game, they’ll do as Mortes has suggested and release Emma in exchange for letting them find Gretz. If Lombardi wins, Gretz’s debt transfers to Jake and they let Bruno go a few rounds with him. Influenced by the urging of the manitou whispering in his ear, Jake accepts the deal.

Session 3

PCs: Jake DeLaure, John Dresden, Anton/Mortes, Francois Gabon

- Patent Scientist Francois Gabon arrives. He accompanies Jake, Mortes and Dresden to Sanzone’s. At the entrance, Dresden pays the bouncer to forget he (Dresden) has been there. Unable to enter the main restaurant without a reservation, the investigators go into the bar.
- Mortes makes the acquaintance of Carmine Genna, an elderly bartender with connections to the Black Hand in general and Angel Lombardi in particular. Carmine is able to check on Mortes’ behalf and finds that some of the thugs hanging out in the bar have been tailing Will Gretz off and on in the recent past on account of his debts. He gets Gretz’s address from them and gives it to Mortes.
- Jake gets into a high-stakes card game with three of the Enforcers in the bar, the Costa brothers (Vito, Bruno and Giovanni). He cheats and ends up winning over $300 in cash, trinkets and IOUs from them. The brothers are not pleased about this but Jake is able to keep them calm enough to refrain from attacking him. At Carmine’s urging, the investigators leave the bar as quickly as possible.

Session 2

PCs: Jake DeLaure, John Dresden, Anton/Mortes

- Dresden investigates the scene of Violet de Valois’ murder and interviews the hotel staff and police involved in the investigation. He discovers little out of place besides a chill current running from the front door sill to the sofa on which the victim’s body was found.
- Jake goes hunting for mob contacts but instead ends up finding the Kroft House, a blues club frequented by police officers. After a few rounds of cards and meeting a few of New Orleans’ finest, Jake makes a hasty exit.
- Senior Mortes allows Grant Ross to stay at his home until Grant’s sister Emma is found. Mortes goes to visit his sister at City Hall the next day and speaks to Mary Adams, a clerk who had worked with Emma. Mary tells him Emma had started going out with a less-than-reputable seeming man named Will Gretz.
- That evening, the investigators gather at the Absinthe House to discuss their findings. After talking things over a bit, Jake is able to recall another place they might look for people involved with the Black Hand – Sanzone’s, a Sicilian restaurant located just a few blocks away.

Session 1 - Mayhem in Metairie

The flower of New Orleans society turned out in droves yesterday to pay final respects to Violet de Valois, the brightest star in the Big Easy’s growing jazz scene, who died recently under circumstances that have roused the curiosity of all but the most jaded. Well-wishers included no less than captains of local industry Andrew Leonhart and Josh Thaler, but if our leading citizens expected a peaceful funeral, they were to be rudely disappointed.

Barely an hour into the somber ceremony, the routine rites were shattered by a devastating attack from an unknown assailant dressed in traditional clown attire who had circulated among guests to distribute purple flowers. It is said a rose by any name would smell as sweet, but these emitted a potent gas that sent many to the ground unconscious. Those who did not succumb to the gas succumbed to panic, and many were injured in the stampede to safety.

A contingent of New Orlean’s Finest, led from the front by Lieutenant Jules Townsend, quickly restored order thanks to the discipline of the officers and the serendipitous assistance of good Samaritans such as Jacob DeLaure and Senior Mortes. The cemetery was evacuated without further incident, and a quick survey confirmed that no one had been seriously wounded. Even “Silver Dollar” Sam Carolla and his personal chief of security, Claudio Ricci, emerged unscathed though they had been at ground zero of the attack.

Who was this curious clown? Interviews conducted in the aftermath of the mayhem revealed that he had not been part of the contingent hired for the wake. A few unidentified witnesses claimed to have seen him waiting in a funeral coach parked at the nearest entrance gate before the funeral, but if any saw him leave after his pernicious prank, none have come forward so far. For now, his motive remains as mysterious as his methodology.

Fact: regardless of what the public might believe regarding how Sam Carolla achieved his position of social prominence, he is nevertheless a very influential man. Fact: men such as he accumulate powerful enemies. Fact: Violet de Valois was well known to be a personal favorite of Sam Carolla, having been linked to him romantically. She is now dead, and her funeral was disrupted by an attack that could very easily have been deadly… but wasn’t. Is someone sending a message?

Too many questions and too few answers, but one thing seems clear: this young ingenue might have sang her last note, but this opera has yet to present its final act.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
